As with many team reports the old saying “It’s a game of 2 halves” rang true today as our new team had a sharp lesson in positional play with 6 goals raining in during the first half, mainly from the same player, as we searched for the right layout for our team. The boys were too shy, on a pitch that, when nothing was said, was spookily quiet. We settled down however and, with the last moments of play my cries of “use the wing” were heard and Greg Mossop, Dan Ward, Tom Airey, Carl Richardson and Rob Whiteley made a push on their “D” that almost got us a goal before the whistle went.
The second half however, after a thorough dissecting of the first half play, was excellent with no ground given easily by any Carlisle Player. The defence came out with more confidence and Jonny Brunskill stopped almost every ball they tried to force through and it was a similar story on the left with James Kelton / Dan Convery getting better every match. Mike Smith was sweeping and using that big hit to launch the ball out of danger. The midfield of Tom Airey and Rob Whiteley knew they could stay deeper into their half and drove the attack using the wings of Carl Richardson / Paul van Iterson and Josh Freshwater / Jamie Snaith which got us 1 goal and 2 penalty corners. This proved again that if you go round their defence and feed it to Greg Mossop or Dan Ward they will score.
Kirby Stephen thought it was going to be a walkover in the first half. They gave Jamie Corson Man of the Match because if they got through the defence, they didn’t get through him, and we dominated the second half. The team did well and we are learning. There is a win coming. Not today but soon.

This
was always going to be a tough match, an older, stronger team with excellent
technical skills, on their pitch, and the last meeting ended in a 0 – 6 defeat
at home (0 – 4 at half time). But they are established and we are in our first
season and improving! As predicted, in the first half, they passed through the
midfield with some well constructed and practiced moves but they weren’t
prepared for our defence. Jonny Brunskill kept his stick low and either took the
ball from them or forced them wide, Paul van Iterson kept pace with their Right
wing and didn’t give them many crossing opportunities and as for me, I stopped
half of the charges and Mike Smith, on strong form today, stopped the rest. This
gave our midfield the confidence to get into attacking formation and Mark Nixon
and Rob Whitely worked hard making passes and intercepting their crosses. As the
half progressed Windermere tried more daring ways to score but they went wide or
Jamie Corson blocked, kicked or slapped the ball away. As the half came to a
close a move between Rob, Greg Mossop and a hard working Dan Ward almost gave us
a goal but Dan just couldn’t get it round the keeper. The half ended in a hard
fought but thoroughly deserved 0 – 0.
We
changed the players around in the second half and Will Barnes took up Jonnys
Right side doing an excellent marking job on their forwards, Tom Airey swopped
with Josh Freshwater in the left wing role and James Kelton swopped with Jamie
Snaith and took up the left back place. The changeovers and their adjustment to
the pace caught us off guard and they scored their first goal in the early
minutes of the re-start. A further change between Andrew Smith and Mark
allowed them to get in a second. This is a lesson we will learn for the future
and was not a reflection of the way Carlisle played. Towards the end of the game
a well worked move by Windermere netted them a third but as the whistle blew for
full time, 3 – 0, the improvement in our team was obvious. Our players are
finding their natural positions now which is making substitutions more of a
challenge but as a team this was a great game. Well done thirds.
