 Fixtures ] [ 3rds-Reports ] Results ]

As with many team reports the old saying “It’s a game of 2 halves” rang true today as our new team had a sharp lesson in positional play with 6 goals raining in during the first half, mainly from the same player, as we searched for the right layout for our team. The boys were too shy, on a pitch that, when nothing was said, was spookily quiet. We settled down however and, with the last moments of play my cries of “use the wing” were heard and Greg Mossop, Dan Ward, Tom Airey, Carl Richardson and Rob Whiteley made a push on their “D” that almost got us a goal before the whistle went.

The second half however, after a thorough dissecting of the first half play, was excellent with no ground given easily by any Carlisle Player. The defence came out with more confidence and Jonny Brunskill stopped almost every ball they tried to force through and it was a similar story on the left with James Kelton / Dan Convery getting better every match. Mike Smith was sweeping and using that big hit to launch the ball out of danger. The midfield of Tom Airey and Rob Whiteley knew they could stay deeper into their half and drove the attack using the wings of Carl Richardson / Paul van Iterson and Josh Freshwater / Jamie Snaith which got us 1 goal and 2 penalty corners. This proved again that if you go round their defence and feed it to Greg Mossop or Dan Ward they will score.

Kirby Stephen thought it was going to be a walkover in the first half. They gave Jamie Corson Man of the Match because if they got through  the defence, they didn’t get through him, and we dominated the second half. The team did well and we are learning. There is a win coming. Not today but soon.

Keswick 2s 4v6 Carlisle 3s

Carlisle 3s travelled to Cockermouth with just 1 sub but high expectations.
As with other matches they took time to settle and within 5 minutes they found ourselves 2 silly goals down, the result of some obvious mistakes but there was no way they were going to lie down, and with a quick re-shuffle at the back the forwards stepped up a gear and within minutes Greg Mossop had started the attack with a well worked goal to the bottom right. 2 minutes later Rob Whitely scored a hard fought goal driven through their defence.
Carl Richardson got into the right wing position he has been developing over the last 3 weeks and put away Carlisle’s 3rd goal, his first. The attack continued with Paul van Iterson running non-stop on the Left wing and defending as well as attacking in their half. Carlisle's defence at this point just stopped a few balls and simply sent them back up. The passing today was superb. As they approached half time they were awarded a penalty corner, the execution of which has been a weak area, not today. Rob Whitely was crisp and accurate and Greg Mossop put it away with 1 swipe. 4 – 2 at half time. A great start.

After just 5 minutes of the second half Mike Smith fed a ball across the goal from the right and Greg put away his third. After 10 minutes of pushing their defence the ball was fed through to Mark Nixon who slipped the ball past the keeper and they watched it slowly trickle into the goal 6 – 2 and we were getting a little too confident with players wanting to push further up the field and have a shot at goal. Some came close, Mike Smith, Josh Freshwater, Rob Whitely and Paul van Iterson but they saw our defence was up the pitch and with 10 minutes remaining ran straight through the holes and scored their 3rd, quickly followed by a fourth. This was frustrating as James Kelton, and Jonny Brunskill were playing very well at the back. Dan Convery dropped back into central defence and Mike Smith took a defensive midfield role and they didn’t get through again. 6 – 4 at full time and a well deserved first win of the season. Greg got their choice of player for his goals but there was only going to be 1 team choice for Man of the Match, Rob Whitely, outstanding in attack, defence and passing.

04/11/07 - Kirkby Lonsdale 5v1 Carlisle 3s - U16s

The first game in the newly formed Cumbria U16s Boys league saw Carlisle 3s travel to Kirkby Lonsdale.

A tight first half saw both teams enjoy chances before Kirkby Lonsdale scored two quick fire goals. Jonny Brunswick then set up Greg Mossop who saw his shot come back off the post with the keeper beaten. The second half saw the game become increasing open. An injury to Paul Van Iterson forced him off and with Carlisle still reorganising themselves Kirkby scored again. A harshly awarded penalty corner then got Kirkby their fourth before Carlisle failed to clear a free hit and Kirkby scored their fifth.

There was still time for Carlisle to score the goal of the game with man of the match Jamie Snaith setting up Greg Mossop to slot home from the edge of the D.

Windermere St Anne's 1s 3v0 Carlisle 3s

This was always going to be a tough match, an older, stronger team with excellent technical skills, on their pitch, and  the last meeting ended in a 0 – 6 defeat at home (0 – 4 at half time). But they are established and we are in our first season and improving! As predicted, in the first half, they passed through the midfield with some well constructed and practiced moves but they weren’t prepared for our defence. Jonny Brunskill kept his stick low and either took the ball from them or forced them wide, Paul van Iterson kept pace with their Right wing and didn’t give them many crossing opportunities and as for me, I stopped half of the charges and Mike Smith, on strong form today, stopped the rest. This gave our midfield the confidence to get into attacking formation and Mark Nixon and Rob Whitely worked hard making passes and intercepting their crosses. As the half progressed Windermere tried more daring ways to score but they went wide or Jamie Corson blocked, kicked or slapped the ball away. As the half came to a close a move between Rob, Greg Mossop and a hard working Dan Ward almost gave us a goal but Dan just couldn’t get it round the keeper. The half ended in a hard fought but thoroughly deserved 0 – 0.

We changed the players around in the second half and Will Barnes took up Jonnys Right side doing an excellent marking job on their forwards, Tom Airey swopped with Josh Freshwater in the left wing role and James Kelton swopped with Jamie Snaith and took up the left back place. The changeovers and their adjustment to the pace caught us off guard and they scored their first goal in the early minutes of the re-start. A further change between  Andrew Smith  and Mark allowed them to get in a second. This is a lesson we will learn for the future and was not a reflection of the way Carlisle played. Towards the end of the game a well worked move by Windermere netted them a third but as the whistle blew for full time, 3 – 0, the improvement in our team was obvious. Our players are finding their natural positions now which is making substitutions more of a challenge but as a team this was a great game. Well done thirds.
