06/10/2007 - Sale 3v7 Carlisle
“Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty... For
tonight, we dine in hell!”
In a game that Carlisle dominated in terms of possession and chances and
ultimately won with ease it is hard to believe that Sale led for long periods of
play. The match began at a slow pace due to it being played on beach and not an
Astroturf and Carlisle struggled to get going. Sale opened the scoring with a
scrappy goal but an instant reply from Carlisle levelled the scores up as Dave
Barren converted from chance after fine work from Boyd Junior down the right
channel. An exact replica of the move should have led to Barron doubling the
lead but he conspired to clear the ball off the line with his foot. Unbelievable
scenes Jeff. Sale immediately punished this let off with a goal on the counter
attack. As the game headed towards half time The young Pirate Oliver Kendrick
created himself a couple of chances the probably should have done better when
faced with an empty goal to aim at.
At half time it was time for some inspiring words and a bit of re-focussing.
Reports are unclear whether it was Captain Wilson or in fact King Leonidas
rallying the troupes but the effect was clear. The Carlisle Spartans immediately
scored from the restart when Britton-Dodd’s shot was converted by Barron. Sale
in their only attack of note in the second half managed to regain the lead from
a short corner but they were not expecting what was about to come. Spectators on
the side thought they must have turned up to watch Arsenal play, as Bowen
(Walcott) Boyd (Fabregas) and Kendrick (Hleb) produced two goals in two minutes
to turn the match on its head. With the score now 4-3 to Carlisle Sale began to
crumble. Barron (Adebayor) completed a routine hatrick and Boyd cleverly scored
his second while Kendrick grabbed another. There was even time for Illidge (Senderos)
and Holliday (Flamini) to narrowly miss chances.
Overall a comprehensive victory for the 11 Spartans that demonstrated a positive
attacking intent combined with some honest hard work.

20/10/07 - City of
Manchester 2nds. 1v2 Carlisle Mens 1sts
Carlisle Men’s 1sts travelled to Belle Vue in Manchester to play on the same
pitch that had months before hosted the European hockey finals. The water based
surface allowed for quick passing and free flowing hockey from both teams.
Carlisle got off to flying start, scoring in the first 5 minutes as the ball
fell to Dave Boyd in the D who scored off the underside of the bar. Carlisle
continued to dominate the early stages of the game but did not make this
pressure count by scoring again. City of Manchester came back at Carlisle with a
number of short corners. One of these deflected past the Carlisle keeper to
level the game before half time.
Early in the second half Dave Boyd won a short corner with a break down the
right. From the ensuing corner Pete Britton-Dodd picked out the veteran Dave
Barron on the post to restore Carlisle’s lead. For the remainder of the half it
was backs to the wall defending from Carlisle. Mike Bowen, Darren Illidge and
Johnny Wilson all battled valiantly to keep City of Manchester at bay.
The game finished with victory for Carlisle, which was needed after the
disappointment of last week.

27/10/07 Carlisle 1s 4v0 Northop Hall 2s
Carlisle made a less than convincing start to the game at home to Northop Hall.
It was the away team which showed more spirit in the opening period, and the
Carlisle defence found themselves under early pressure. Carlisle soon rose to
the challenge of a good spirited, but competitive match.
Carlisle’s play was not pretty, but the home team started to create chances, and
looked dangerous on the break. David Boyd’s mazy runs from the right gave the
Northop Hall defence something to think about, and Daz Illidge went close with a
couple of close range attempts.
0-0 at half time was a fair refection of the first half, but Northop Hall spirit
waned in the second, and they allowed Carlisle to gain the upper hand.
Carlisle’s play was now starting to look more inventive than that of their
opponents and Carlisle finally scored when Dave Barron knocked the ball in from
close range. Carlisle enjoyed attacking down the right and effective crosses
into the D from the right wing set up the next two goals:
Oli Kendrick and Dave Barron scoring one apiece.
The rather ironic coup de grâce came in the shape of Dave Barron’s third goal in
the final minute. He miss hit the ball from a few yards out, and the unfortunate
‘keeper, being wrong-footed, could only watch as the ball dribbled past his feet
over the line. Hat-trick hero Dave Barron was duly voted Man of the Match.
Carlisle players: M Hutchinson, J Wilson, J Richardson, M Holmes, O Kendrick, S
Boyd, M Bowen, D Boyd, D Barron, D Illidge, C Holiday, P Britton-Dodd.
10/11/07 - Lytham Saint Anne’s 2s 1v3
Carlisle 1s
On a windy day at the seaside it was Carlisle who opened the scoring with a Dave
Boyd goal. The striker seemed to enjoy his return to the Carlisle front line,
and ran amok amongst the Lytham defence. But for the cat-like skills of the
Lytham ‘keeper, Carlisle would surely have been ahead sooner.
Lytham were certainly the best team that Carlisle have faced in the league so
far this season, and the home team soon enjoyed exerting a prolonged spell of
pressure over the Carlisle team. Carlisle defended well, but were perhaps a
little fortunate to survive several short corner attempts.
With Lytham looking threatening on the attack, Carlisle played on the break.
Eventually the second goal came when Carlisle sweeper Jonny Richards made a well
timed tackle on the edge of his own D. Jonny was allowed to drive the length of
the pitch unchallenged, and after a neat return pass from Daz Illidge, he
finished the move he started with a fine goal.
Lytham had the better of the second half. The third Carlisle goal was against
the run of play, but a well worked move on the break was too much for the Lytham
defence. Man of the match Olly Kendrick finished the move.
Carlisle started to tire towards the end of the match, and Lytham threw
everything they had into getting back into the game. Their reward was a well
taken consolation goal. Carlisle were forced defend up to the final whistle to
ensure the three points would go back on the bus to Cumbria.
Bring on Trinity for the top of the table clash next week.

24/11/07 -
CREWE
VAGRENTS 0
CARLISLE 1ST 3
Carlisle
travelled away to Crewe hoping
to re-establish their title credentials after the disappointing loss the
previous week. With the clubs top goals scorer David Boyd back this week and new
signing Matt Wilson joining up with the squad Carlisle started brightly.
Britton-Dodd dominated the midfield and it was from his well struck short corner
that Michael Bowen was able to turn in the rebound. Crewe responded immediately
and it was only the solid defending from Messrs Illidge and Wilson Snr that
preserved the lead. Carlisle’s second goal came shortly before half time as
David Boyd got on the end of an excellent through ball from Kendrick and calmly
rounded the keeper before scoring into the unguarded net.
The second half was a comfortable
affair for Carlisle, as they controlled the play and created chances at will.
The dynamic Craig Holliday created the final goal on the hour as a barnstorming
run followed by a quick interchange with Barron set up Boyd again to score.
Overall a promising display of hockey
which at times was excellent but always comfortable.
Team: Hutchinson, Holmes, Illidge,
Cramb, Wilson, Alex, Kendrick, Bowen, Boyd

01/12/07 - CARLISLE
MENS 1ST 2
DEESIDE RAMBLERS
2
Carlisle Men put in a Jekyll and Hyde
performance and ultimately paid the price against lower opposition. Starting in
a relaxed manner Carlisle’s play on the smooth surface was promising and they
edged the early chances with the best chance being fluffed by Oliver Kendrick.
Not to be disheartened Kendrick played a crucial role in opening the scoring
with a neat interchange with Craig Holiday squaring the ball to David Boyd whose
first time effort from the edge of the box arrowed high past the keeper and into
the goal. Chances began to open up for Carlisle towards the end of the half and
after Boyd had missed a few it was down to the old-pro Dave Barron to lead by
example and to turn in a Mike Bowen short corner.
Deeside got a dose of the infamous
‘hair-dryer’ treatment at half time and responded immediately with two goals to
peg Carlisle back. This meant that the second half became a cagey performance
for Carlisle with cards being given to midfield Steven Boyd and Barron
highlighting their frustrations and being unable to break down a stubborn
Deeside defence.
Carlisle
stay with the leading pack but need to pick up maximum points in the lead-up to
the winter break.

08/12/07 - Oxton 2 v Carlisle Men’s 1st 2
Carlisle started this weeks game fresh off a long bus journey to Birkenhead with
no warm up, just like a team fresh of a long bus to Birkenhead. Badly.
Lacking cohesion, communication and focus Carlisle allowed the opening play to
be dominated by a young but alert side from Oxton, who to Carlisle’s benefit
managed to miss a series of early chances. However with Pete Burns back in the
heart of the midfield the game gradually began to become equal.
As the half wore on the hard work of Oliver Kendrick combined with the magical
brilliance of forward David Boyd and pacey winger Mike Bowen produced a blatant
penalty flick which Pete Burns converted to give the half time lead to Carlisle.
High flying Carlisle were rightly aggrieved at their first half performance and
set out to improve in the second half and opened brightly even against the
torrential rain and sharp breeze with Holliday and Kendrick both performing
admirably in attack. However a swift counter attack from Oxton resulted in a
free shot for the opposing young striker and despite Hutchinson’s fantastic full
length save the rebound was turned in to equalise. An instant replay was needed
and was thankfully provided. David Boyd’s skilful play and drag back found Craig
Holiday, the Burgh born midfield all-star, whose first time cover drive flew
past the keeper and gave the lead to Carlisle and the player his first form his
home town club.
Carlisle began to dominate now with midfielder Steven Boyd driving forward but
as in previous weeks were unable to hold on to a lead, as a short corner routine
was squeezed past the valiant Hutchinson in goal only for Holmes to miss on the
line. With little time left in the game Oxton managed to produce a goal mouth
scramble that Holmes calmly cleared with the help of his foot. The resulting
Penalty flick was nonchalantly saved by Hutchinson who picked up the man of the
match award alongside the 2-2 draw for Carlisle.
A poor run up to Christmas has dropped Carlisle back into the pack of promotion
seeking teams and it can only be hoped that the pre-season form can be
rediscovered before the promotion favourites drop into mid table obscurity
Carlisle 1st team take a Christmas break and next play on January 12th, but the
2nd team, play Southport on Saturday, and Liverpool Sefton on January 5th, both
of whom cancelled the original games due to problems travelling to Carlisle.
Carlisle 3rd team take on Keswick on Sunday.
